On June 25th, we had a presentation on Austin’s abolitionist movement and the Underground Railroad for Freedom Fighters from Central Texas into Mexico. This event was an event by the Museo/Institute Taskforce and Save Palm School Alliance hosted by Latino Arts, Culture and Education (LACE).
LUCHAS Y LIBERTAD: SLAVERY AND FREEDOM, CENTRAL TEXAS AND THE BORDERLANDS was held at the Emma S. Barrientos, Mexican American Cultural Center and presented by Dr. Maria E Hammack. Dr. Hammack is the Barra Postdoctoral Fellow at the McNeil Center for Early American Studies at the University of Pennsylvania. She is a Mexican scholar and public historian whose work bridges, through a gender lens, the histories of liberation and abolition in North America and the Black Diaspora in Mexico.
The presentation is an exciting public presentation on Austin’s role as part of the Underground Railroad for enslaved people fighting for liberation and abolition, and their exodus into Mexico. The mechanics, the routes, the key participants, history, chronology and key participants.
